Baltimore legend Andy Bopp cannot be corralled into a specific genre. Sure, his band Myracle Brah forged some of the grandest Power Pop ever recorded and one of his more recent solo albums, Blisters and Thorns, found a spot on many critics’ best of the year lists, even though that album blended heartland rock, memorable melodies and darkly introspective lyrics. Yet Andy Bopp continues to seek and develop his craft as a songwriter, arranger and producer. Sonically, Bopp’s new album, Maker, has shades of Joy Division, Radiohead, late period Talk Talk and Bowie’s Berlin trilogy. These textures are a part of the show, but the headliners are the songs. Bopp has crafted another batch of beautiful, powerful songs that burrow under your skin, melodically and lyrically.
